Aus Music Festival Heads To London: ‘It’s Quite Unique’

Aussie festival So Frenchy So Chic will make its international debut in 2020, with its founder today announcing a London event.

After launching in Melbourne in 2012 and expanding to Sydney a few years later, the beloved event will take over Greenwich’s Old Royal Naval College on 5 September, thanks to a new deal with UK promoter Nick Zuppar.

“It’s been on my mind for a while now because the model is expandable and it’s quite unique, in terms of what the festival is in its DNA,” festival founder Jean-François Ponthieux told The Music.

“It’s about promoting community and joy and I think it’s important to create moments like that...[So Frenchy So Chic] is about embracing the universal language of music without the cliché.”

With So Frenchy So Chic being the only festival dedicated to French music outside French-speaking countries, Ponthieux has hopes to expand the event’s global reach further at some stage, depending on how well its international debut goes.

“For me, it’s about making sure that London goes well and then we can see where we’ll take it, but it’s one step at a time.”

Over the years, So Frenchy So Chic has hosted the likes of Camille, Émilie Simon, Moriarty, Lou Doillon, Féfé, The Dø and more, with the next Australian events taking place in Melbourne and Sydney in January with sets from Corine, Lou Doillon, Nouvelle Vague, Tété and Philippe Cohen Solal (DJ set).
