Yes, Will.I.Am, 'This is freaking nutty nuts' indeed.

With the massive success of their program The Masked Singer drawing huge crowds, American television network FOX is upping the 'anonymous performer' game and going digital with a new program, Alter Ego.

Unlike the celebrity-sleuthing that comes with The Masked Singer, Alter Ego will see members of the public donning state-of-the-art tech bodysuits to be transformed into CGI characters to perform onstage.

While audiences at home will see the singers themselves, the judges and studio audience have no clue who is taking part.

The judging roles on the show will be taken up by Canadian '90s icon Alanis Morissette, Black Eyed Peas rapper Will. I. Am, art-pop sensation Grimes and former member of boyband 98 Degrees, Nick Lachey.

The show is billed as a feel-good singing competition, designed to let those with anxiety or a fear of performing let loose under the guise of a computer generated character. The bizarre 3D avatars are beamed onto a stage in front of the judges and audience, backed by a live band and dancers.

There's no word of an Australian release at this stage, but a full trailer for the season has been released online. Check it out here.
