The Vaudeville Smash Report From Music Matters Singapore, Part II

"Apparently word had gotten around that this band from Melbourne (that's us!) was getting their groove on."

Iced condensed milk coffee is a really good way to start the day. Got chatting to a local fella called Wilson who told me about a food court for the locals we had to go to and also the state of the economy in South East Asia. Interesting fella. Woke up the lads, went to said food court and stuffed ourselves with two and three dollar dishes. DELICIOUS. Our guitarist is vegetarian; he was in heaven.

We had one show that night. Went on after Adelaide band At Sunset who arrived in Singapore to a group of screaming girls. We know this because they were on the same plane as us. Sort of Reece Mastin meets One Direction. Needless to say, the airport girls were also at this show and the screams and "I Love You"s were deafening in the small club, called the Crazy Elephant.

We were a little worried that the crowd would thin after At Sunset and it did… but not much. Apparently word had gotten around that this band from Melbourne (that's us!) was getting their groove on. The response from the Singaporean crowd was overwhelming. Every time I'd pick up the sax to solo, I'd get a cheer and every time our drummer, Dan, sang (especially in falsetto)… more screams.

The few CDs we'd given out the night before had obviously been listened to as the kids were singing our songs and the crowd built so that by the end of our short set, it was as packed as it was for At Sunset. Post gig, lots of pictures and Album signing.

We then went out and got really drunk with some of the Aussie contingent and saw Katie Noonan on the main stage and sang along…

We forced ourselves to get up the next day as we wanted to see the Aquarium. After returning to the magical food court, we trekked out there and were wowed. It's the biggest in the world and so organised. The world is made up of some pretty weird creatures (other than musicians!)…

Our final gig was at 11pm that night. After a filmed interview where we were given some of the local delicacies to try (that's how you interview) we headed to the show. Funnily enough, we followed At Sunset again who had brought their mob of screaming girls. This time however, there were more people when we played and the response was even bigger. It was honestly almost like a Melbourne show, with the crowd interaction and cheers in all the right places (although I can honestly say have never had that sort of response for a sax solo).

They even did this call and response thing for our final song 'Hey', which has never been done before, anywhere, and was not prompted by me at all. It was magic! The cheer for an encore was manic and the disappointment when we couldn't huge. There were lines for CDs and autographs and we took photos well into the next band's set.

We stayed at the bar and drank our hearts out. It seemed to be the unofficial wrap up party for the conference so we got to meet a lot of the influential people for South East Asian music. Also got to catch a few numbers from Aussie band Fairchild - very good and a bunch of nice lads.

The tour as a whole was brilliant and well worth it. Unlike SxSW, the organisers and other influentials are far more accessible. I doubt it will remain this way for long though… Pitbull and Calvin Harris are already scheduled for next year. The Singaporean fans are some of the most enthusiastic and response we've come across. There was a lot of love. We will definitely be back!
