Studio address: 87-91 Arden Street, North Melbourne

How long has the studio been running? Newmarket started back in 1986, and has been open ever since. It's had a few changes to the building and studio over that period, but it's been open and making great records the whole 30 years.

What makes your studio different? We have four isolated tracking rooms with sight between them all, allowing bands to record live together while having isolation. The impressive selection of vintage microphones and a 24-track analogue tape machine capturing great performances.

What's your favourite piece of equipment you have in the studio? With such a great selection of microphones, it's hard to play favourites... The Neumann U47 sounds great on so many things. Big warm vocals, rich guitars, unreal drums. And with the U48, what a pair!

Do you find you specialised in specific genres? I've been working across tonnes of genres over the past years, with the majority being indie-pop, rock, folk and jazz. I love to specifically hone in on capturing great live performances regardless [of] what genre.

Who have been your favourite artist(s) to come in? I've just finished the new Dorsal Fins record. They are so great to work with. Keen on quirky unusual sounds with plenty of vibe in each performance. Mixing their stuff is an absolute pleasure!

What do believe has been the most well produced album of 2016 so far? 2016 I can't decide, but from 2015 King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard's Paper Mache Dream Balloon is one I keep coming back to. Great songwriting and melodies with interesting sounds and instrumentation. Can't get enough!

What services does your studio offer? Along with great recording, we can offer exceptional mixing with analogue warmth and depth running through the Harrison Console, together with the benefits of Pro Tools. The real plate reverb ties everything together nicely too!

Do you prefer analogue or digital? A hybrid between the two proves to be the ultimate answer. We use our great array of analogue gear together with tasty plug-ins, and the quickness and preciseness of Pro Tools to get great results!

Who would be your dream artist to have record/rehearse in the studio? Alabama Shakes. I love their mix of inspiring production with tonnes of interesting sounds, together with great songwriting to always make timeless records! I would love to do their next one ;)
