"I also think it relates to most people’s search for where and how they belong in the world.”

For the uninitiated YoWo Music is a brilliant Melbourne-based contemporary music program for girls and gender non-conforming youth in high school. Today they premiere a brand new track called Built For Boys and announce a new album, Work Like That, out 23 November exclusively on theMusic.com.au

Produced with support from Creative Victoria and Australia Council and through guidance and mentorship from professional musicians, the nine-track collection is a pretty special release. Artistic directors of YoWo Music Lena Douglas and Claire Cross agree with that sentiment with Douglas saying,  “These are all original songs written and played by teenagers – and despite us not setting a theme for the album, all the tracks seem to have something in common; they all say something about navigating relationships and trying to find your place in the world.”

Built For Boys, which premieres today, was written by YoWo alumni Lily Harnath and is the perfect exemplar of the album. Speaking on the inspiration behind the track, Harnath said, “My song is about one of my friends trying to find her identity, but I also think it relates to most people’s search for where and how they belong in the world.”

To celebrate the release of Work Like That, YoWo Music are putting on an all-ages performance in Melbourne next month. Be sure to scroll down to theGuide and check out all the details.
