Single title? Oh Mama
What's the song about? A cry for female connection in a society that often requires us to be strong and bold, repressing softer expressions.
How long did it take to write/record? Oh Mama was first inspired by a novel that Erin read in 2013 about 20th Chinese mothers and daughters at the mercy of their societies gender-based expectations. We didn’t record until three years later!
Is this track from a forthcoming release/existing release?: Yes, Oh Mama is the first single of Sitara’s debut visual album Alchemy, which will be released on June 7.
What was inspiring you during the song's writing and recording? The universal tension that seems to challenge women between female solidarity, competition, and rising above the patriarchy that governs most of our world.
Hearing our sister voices combine – a female cry to the sisterhood!
We'll like this song if we like... Irish sea shanties, girl power, two different time signatures and drinking herbal tea.
Do you play it differently live?: Yes, sometimes, as a duo. One of the best things recording with amazing musicians is they play amazing parts. The less exciting part is Erin has to try replicating this!
When and where is your launch/next gigs? We launch Alchemy with a preview screening in Adelaide June 6th at the Mercury Cinema. The album releases digitally June 7 with teaser trailers, clips and many treats before then.
