Single Focus: Beth & The Brave

3 October 2014 | 4:22 pm | Staff Writer

Beth & The Brave's debut single 'Grey Waltz Blue' was informed by Beth's work with survivors of family violence.

Answered by: Beth King

Single title? Grey Waltz Blue

What’s the song about? The incredible difficult journey undertaken by each survivor leading up to their decision to leave a violent relationship.

How long did it take to write/record? The chords were written first, waiting for a theme that would fit the mood they inspired. The song was recorded over a few days last summer, then tweaked, mixed and mastered over the following months.

Is this track from a forthcoming release/existing release? Yes! It’s on our debut single Grey Waltz Blue which we’re currently releasing via an east coast tour through Victoria, the ACT and NSW, and launching in Melbourne on Thursday 9 Oct!

What was inspiring you during the song’s writing and recording? The inspiration came from Beth’s work with survivors of family violence, and the song aims to spark conversation around how each of us can play a role in decreasing its prevalence in our communities.

We’ll like this song if we like... Getting lost in the deep heady richness of another person’s reality. Music-wise, We Added It Up — My Brightest Diamond.

Do you play it differently live? Yes, we like to improvise and let rip! Beth whispers, growls and roars, the flute croons and shrieks, and the bass swoops and soars, in a mournful and frenetic symphony.

When and where is your launch/next gig? Our single launch is on Thursday 9 Oct at The Gasometer Hotel! With Khristian Mizzi & The Sirens and Sekkt and special guests. Ten per cent of proceeds to InTouch Multicultural Centre Against Family Violence.
