Melbourne-via-London producer Super Magic Hats — that is, Rob Masterton — drops his debut album, Separation, today and to celebrate, we're premiering the absolutely stunning pastel-coloured video clip for his single, Transpose.
Concepted and animated by Tessa Chong, the video is an abstract representation of the Tokyo landscape and its residents, food and nightlife — the shimmering, tinkling track is the perfect soundtrack to the eye-catching video, complete with koi fish, taxis, ramen and the incredibly busy Shibuya crossing.
Masterton says about the album from which Transpose hails: "A lot of the inspiration for the tracks was in feelings around anxiety, displacement, longing and uncertainty, and I guess how I could come to terms with those things and tried to accept them rather than ignoring them.
"As such, it was at times cathartic and therapeutic to write. I feel like there's often a lot of pressure to always present as being positive and this is reflected a little in the superficially upbeat nature of tracks that for me were based on less upbeat sentiment."
