Up-and-coming Brisbane outfit OJ Mengel have unveiled the video for their ludicrously catchy, mega-fun new single, Coach, premiering today on theMusic.com.au.
The song is the first track to be taken from the band's upcoming EP Inauguration, and perfectly captures the kind of relaxed irreverence, easy humour and fundamentally good nature for which Queenslanders are renowned, when the rest of the states aren't busy looking down their noses at them for the whole One Nation thing (look, fair criticism).
Given that Brisbane and the rest of the Sunshine State just endured one of its hottest summers ever, the song truly captures the local spirit of the opening stretch of 2017 as a fittingly sunny, loose and feelgood jangle-fest with a video packed full of mateship, Milton Mangoes (that's XXXX Gold to the interstate lot) and mirthful mischief, all tied together with a spot of good old-fashioned beach cricket to boot.
OJ Mengel is centred on the Mengel brothers, Oliver and Jordan, and their mates Nick Downing and Fletcher Ross. A product of Brisbane's well-regarded indie-alt-pop movement, the band eschew easy labels and have landed on a sound that definitely feels like a breath of fresh air in a scene crowded with overly clean, cookie-cutter acts of a similar ilk.

“We think it just sounds like us," the band has explained of their vibe. "But being true to the Bris-core movement of searching for pop perfection with an energetic beat is a real mantra to the band. It comes from a real desire to be who we are, and to not conform to what’s going on in other other places."
As well as emerging as the victors of December's Homegrown Battle of the Bands at The Brightside, OJ Mengel have been building an impressive live resume through their energetic outings at beloved local venues such as Ric's Bar, The Zoo, The Triffid and The Tivoli, where they recently graced the stage for the theatre's Yonder festival.
