Hermitude revisit their early days with Gimme, their new single

Hermitude have been heavy-hitters in the Australian trap scene for years now, establishing themselves as leaders of the pack some four years ago now with Speak of the Devil and Hyperparadise (yes, it’s actually been that long). Spending many years building up a repertoire of hip-hop-influenced, largely-instrumental productions, it was a surprise to many to see them take a more vocal-dominated style with the release of Dark Night Sweet Light, their fifth studio album. Guest slots by Yeo, Estelle, Bertie Blackman and more gave Dark Night Sweet Light a different feel to Hermitude’s previous work, but it paid off – with Hermitude now no longer just a front-runner in the Australian market, but now internationally.

Their new single Gimme goes where Dark Night Sweet Light didn’t by revisiting their early, grimier sounds. Blending deep hip-hop influences with hard-hitting gritty, dark bass and complex percussion, Gimme is sure to please both Hermitude’s new fans begging for more and their older fans, some of which left disappointed by their new, radio-friendly approach (not that we’re complaining). “Gimme couldn’t find a place for it on Dark Night Sweet Light but it found a home in our live sets” they said in a tweet, and when it comes down to it, they’re right. Here’s hoping a couple more of their unreleased live remakes come to light soon (coughcough Hermitude’s remix of Kanye’s All Day coughcough).
