Melbourne grindcore maniacs Fuck I'm Dead have a new album in the works and a spot on the upcoming national Bastardfest tour. Ahead of these highly-anticipated shows, Killyourstereo caught up with FID vocalist Jay Jones for a chat.

It’s been a while since we’ve heard any new material from the Fuck I’m Dead camp. Can we expect a new album anytime soon?

Yes, you sure can. We will be launching our new album at the Bastardfest shows and it will be titled Another Gory Mess, which it will be. Expect a slab of death, grind and some thrash.

I’ve read you’ve replaced your drum machine with live drummer Darren Condy. That’s awesome, but with the amount of blast beats you guys have, how the fuck does he do it? Seriously, he must be really good.

That’s why we call him the Dazzler - he is a blast machine. At the time, we were thinking of getting a drummer and he put his hand up for it and now the rest is history. You will see how good he is at Bastardfest.

Do your friends and family understand and support what you do? I mean, to be honest, grindcore is cool but it’s a little esoteric.

Yeah, we do get support from our friends and family. Our mums and dads have been to see Fuck I’m Dead at some stage along the way. They don’t really understand it but it sure gave them a laugh! A lot of our friends really dig grindcore, so that’s cool.

What got you interested in grindcore music in the first place?

Well, in my case it was hearing bands such as Napalm Death, Repulsion and Seige when I was a teenager back in the ‘80s – yes, I am old! The heaviness, the rawness of it: it was like thrash, metal and punk mixed together but played as fast as they could go. It blew my mind. I remember saying to a mate, when Reign in Blood by Slayer first came out, that I thought that was the fastest album ever and nothing would be faster - then I heard a blast beat and it changed my world.

You guys started out in 2000. Most bands that play extreme music seem to fizzle out within a few years, but you’ve stuck together. How?

We try to make it as fun as possible and don’t take it all too seriously. If we don’t feel like playing for a bit we just don’t so we don’t get sick of it. Plus we are all great mates which always helps.

You’ve got your first show in over a year coming up in September at the Bendigo Hotel, Collingwood. So, what’s planned for this one and what did you get up to during the band’s down time?

It’s a bit of a warm up show for the Bastardfest tour, but we won’t be playing like it’s a warm up. We will be hitting the stage with both barrels ready to kill. We will play a bit of the old hits plus some new tunes from the upcoming album. Come down and get destroyed.

We all have other bands and projects happening while Fuck I'm Dead is having a break.

What’s the most fucked up thing you’ve seen at a Fuck I’m Dead show?

At our first ever show a guy tried to fight the whole crowd. He was a nut. He did pretty well to hold his own but as you can imagine it didn’t go well for him in the end. And I once had a guy tell me after we played that he actually liked to eat shit. I think he really did and wasn’t just joking.

What do you think about mainstream metal, you know, like the bands that play Soundwave and stuff like that?

I have no problem with that. Good luck to them. Imagine how lucky these bands are - they probably don’t have day jobs and make a living off music. I wouldn’t mind that.

Do you only listen to metal?

No, we all listen to all sorts of music such as punk, alternative, blues rock, hip-hop ect ect.

Can you please ask this guy to join the band? Or at least guest on the new album?

(laughs) that guy is a legend. I have seen that before. I would love to get him up at a show. Good shit.



Have you ever considered changing your name?

Never!

Grindcore and metal in general seems to be a lot more popular overseas than it is here. Have you ever been tempted to relocate abroad?

No, not really. We all have lives in Australia. Maybe if we had an offer that was too good to refuse? But, no.

Do you play in any other bands?

Yes, we do. I play in the Kill, but I play drums in that band. I also have a punk project happening, which Rohan from Capt Cleanoff is sorting out.

What’s Fuck I’m Dead’s connection with the Day Everything Became Nothing?

Both of our guitarists, Dave and Xavier, play in The Day Everything Became Nothing. We also toured the US together in 2008.

Do you have anything special planned for the upcoming Bastardfest shows?

We could have - but you will all just have to wait and see.

Okay, time for a hypothetical: someone’s holding a gun to your head and you have to drink either a cup of shit or a cup of menstrual blood. Which one do you choose?

I would ask for both in the same cup!

Let’s start to wrap things up. What’s planned for the rest of the year?

We play Bastardfest and then play some more shows around the place, promote the new album and start writing some new tunes for upcoming releases.

Do you have any parting words of advice for KYS readers?

Buy our new album so we can buy some new pants and come to our shows and MOSH! Also get down to a Bastardfest show, great lineups everywhere, and as you all know, you will fit in because you are all Bastards!
