Album Focus: Backsliders

Answered by: Dom Turner

Album title?: Heathen Songbook

Where did the title of your new album come from? The band name is Backsliders — which is a common term, particularly in southern American church rhetoric, meaning someone who has turned away from religion and gone 'back' to their old drinking and partying ways.

How many releases do you have now? Fourteen.

How long did it take to write/record? Recording was done over a few days but the writing process is always longer — more like a year.

Was anything in particular inspiring you during the making? Overdevelopment of Sydney in terms of what I call 'disposable architecture'. Examples are in Alexandria and around the Carriageworks area in Newtown.

What's your favourite song on it? Mmm… it's a very eclectic record, but I'll go for You Are Not Alone.

Will you do anything differently next time? We always try to make each album different in some way.

When and where is your launch/next gig? 6 Aug, The Basement, Sydney; 17 Sep Caravan Music Club.
