“I’ve been on Instagram and stuff before but Twitter’s pretty interesting. I followed God the other day, I Am God or something like that."

Sometimes you just need to give the people what they want. For Brisbane-based electronic artist Charles Murdoch, that means brushing up his social media skills. “I got on the Twitter train just last week, which is good,” says Murdoch. “I've been on Instagram and stuff before but Twitter's pretty interesting. I followed God the other day, I Am God or something like that. And then I followed Miley Cyrus, which I thought was pretty funny. I'm trying to be more on top of social media but I've never really delved into the whole hash tag thing. I guess I'm trying to pick it up now though so I can give the people what they want.”

The influx of fans is largely thanks to the release of Murdoch's debut EP, Weathered Straight, which adds to his growing repertoire of dubby, liquid beats and club-friendly sounds. “To be honest I didn't really know what was going to happen, how successful it would be or how well it was going to do,” he says. “I felt confident when I knew it was going out on the Future Classic label because I knew it could have a bit of success, but I never thought about getting it played on radio or the amount of blog love stuff it's received.”

Some of its success can be attributed to the EP's lead single, Dekire, which features the smooth vocals of Melbourne-based artist Oscar Key Sung. “I was making tunes and trying to get him on some songs but he was just busy with his stuff. I think I mentioned to him one day I was looking at doing this EP and he finally agreed and yeah, the rest is history. We got coffee not long ago and it was weird 'cause he was thanking me, saying it sounded amazing. And I was kind of like, 'Oh man, I've been obsessed with your vocals for ages, like, you made it for me.' It was just an awesome, awesome thing to happen.”

While Murdoch says a tour isn't on the table, he says there's plenty more music on the way. “I'm doing the odd show here and there but I'm working on a new EP then eventually an album. But I kind of want to take myself away to really get into that. I think the new EP is where I'm kind of going to find my place and what sort of style I'm going to want the album to be like. I've always been into house music so I think there will be a much more housier vibe and maybe a bit more instrumentation. I'm getting obsessed with the fluidity and movement of things in music so you'll probably hear a lot more of that.”
