More San Mei More San Mei

Rising Gold Coast artist San Mei recently turned heads with her excellent cut Revel (and Zaped's sweet, sweet remix thereof), and today she's following that up with a brand new slice of crunchy, ethereal alt-rock in Rewind, the video for which is proudly premiering on theMusic.com.au today.

Buzzing synths weave their way into and around the song's driven, distorted guitar and forward-pushing percussion as San Mei's lush, airy vocals float atop the mix, couching the soundscape in effortless allure from start to finish.

The clip, which was directed by Mick Soiza with cinematography from Sean Ryan, follows the songstress on an urban odyssey that starts — and frequently returns to — the neon-lit sprawl of the city at night, interspersed with moments of daylit rural calm. Disparate scenes though they are, both equally serve as apt accompaniment for the song's moreish melodies, Soiza's selective use of slow-mo adding to the effect throughout.

The whole package is an impressively accomplished result, though — with a background in classical piano and the kind of work ethic that has seen her teach herself multiple other instruments — that shouldn't really come as a surprise for a musician of San Mei's studiousness.

The Queensland talent has been steadily growing her renown of late, stepping up to support Elliphant at her recent show in Brisbane, and has plans to release her debut EP at some stage in 2017, so she's definitely an artist on whom you'll be wanting to keep an eye in the new year, as there are no doubt plenty of bigger things to come.

Rewind will be released this Friday, 18 November. For more information — and to keep on top of any upcoming gigs and other things she's got going on — see San Mei's Facebook page.
