Live Review: Illy, Tuka, Allday

If the crowd’s appreciation of an artist is anything to judge a set by, the three bras that were launched onstage during the night are a sure indication that Illy killed it.

More Illy More Illy

It was an all ages affair at the Metro Theatre on Saturday night and 22 year-old rapper Allday drew a sizeable crowd of young 'uns when he took to the stage around 8pm. His raw voice and funky beats set the tone for the night and got the crowd buzzing. Watching one underage fangirl scramble up on to the stage to join Allday, prancing around with her middle fingers in the air before being escorted off by security was a highlight of the set. The lowlight was three other boys who decided to do the exact same thing one after the other – let the guy get through his song, hey.

By 9pm the crowd had started to creep forward from the stadium-like pews at the Metro, gravitating towards the infectious sense of energy and confidence that Sydney-based rapper Tuka was spitting out on stage. It was an impressive home crowd that showed up to support this individual who is fast making a reputable name for himself on the Australian hip hop scene.

Although it wasn't a sold-out show, the venue was close to full by the time Illy jumped on stage. It was a fairly standard set for the Melbourne-based rapper and he did what he knows best – he pulled the crowd in and kept them there with a range of new material, old crowd favourites and impressive covers. Maintaining tight control of the crowd like a seasoned professional, Illy gave fans a taste of his upcoming album, Cinematic, which is set to drop early next month.

To top the night off, Tuka, Allday and Elemont joined Illy on stage to perform their collab track, How Far, before they ventured out into the crowd to give humble thanks to their fans. If the crowd's appreciation of an artist is anything to judge a set by, the three bras that were launched onstage during the night are a sure indication that Illy killed it.
