Album Review: Carthasy - The Gyre

If you like the opener, Ascent, you’ll hear it ten more times before the album is done.

A recurring structure is established early and hangs in there of most of The Gyre. Ominously quiet guitar intros quickly morph into dropped-tuned riffage, letting us know Carthasy mean business… metal business. Then it's the same vocal progression - screaming, melodious tones and angst - then a mid-song breather before the closing money shot. There's nothing wrong with this formula – it makes for some pretty great, accessible metal. Only problem is the result is basically the same song over and over. If you like the opener, Ascent, you'll hear it ten more times before the album is done.
