Troye Sivan has opened up about his work in the new film, Boy Erased, directed, written and produced by Joel Edgerton and starring fellow Aussie heavyweights, Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman.

The coming-of-age drama tells the story about a young man (played by Jared Hedges) who is outed to his parents (played by Crowe and Kidman) and must make the choice between attending a conversion therapy program or be permanently exiled by his family, friends and faith.

Speaking to The Music this month, Sivan said he is "really, really, really excited" about the film, which is yet to have an Australian release date confirmed, but is expected to open in the US this November.

"I haven't seen it yet, but people who have are really proud of it and excited about it," the Perth artist said.

"It was a really scary thing just because I feel way less comfortable and confident in acting just because I've done so much less of it.

"As well, it's like, I'm so used to being really in control with music with every step of the processes, my ideas, people are helping me make my vision come true. Where as here, I am 100% there to serve Joel as the director and so it's kinda scary to relinquish that control. But I really enjoyed it. I loved it so much."

The newly-released trailer also features a new track by Sivan and Sigur Rós frontman Jónsi, Revelation
