Opinions Divided As Iconic Melbourne Rock Bar Proposes Banning Mobile Phones From Gigs

A proposed ban on mobile phones from gigs at Melbourne's iconic Cherry Bar has garnered a wave of both criticism and support today. 

The beloved live music venue, based on AC/DC Lane, put the question forward to punters in a Facebook post today.

"Cherry Bar is proposing to ban mobile phones from its live gigs," the statement reads.

"Not entirely of course. We will tolerate a quick snap of a band. However, holding up your phone and filming an entire song is just not on.

"It blocks the view of those behind you, it distracts the band and it’s just uncool.

"Holding up your phone and filming songs at a live music gig is just not rock n roll. And at all times Cherry Bar must stand up for rock n roll."

In just a matter of hours, the post attracted hundreds of comments both for and against the proposal. 

One user commented, "Taking photos and recording one or two songs is something I've done for a long time for my own collection. Its not uncool and it doesn't mean it's not rock and roll", while another wrote, "Yes! Start a trend. I've seen people stand there and film a whole show".
