Papa Roach On Extended Absence From Australia: 'One Of The Dumb Moves In Our Career'

Having just kicked off their first-ever Australian headline tour this week, US alt-rock legends ​Papa Roach have expressed their regret over skipping Aussie audiences during their 20-plus year career.

Speaking to The Music, frontman Jacoby Shaddix expanded on his dismay over how, save for a Red Hot Chilli Peppers support slot in 2002 and a spot on 2015’s Soundwave festival, the band never embarked on their own run of the country.

"I have no idea why we didn't double-back and come back to Australia,” Shaddix said.

“One of the dumb moves in our career, I believe, was not coming back after doing stadium shows with the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

The singer suggested the group's need to re-establish their fanbase back home kept them away from touring Down Under.

"I think part of it too was we really had to tend to our fanbase in America, 'cause we kinda, after the second and into the third album of Papa Roach's career with (2002's) Lovehatetragedy and (2004's) Getting Away With Murder, we had a big backlash. Our fanbase just quit on us," Shaddix explained.

"It was kind of like a back-to-square-one moment for the band. We've had a few highs and lows in our career, but to be able to work through those moments and continue, to carry on and create music that connects with people and build a career back from almost nothing, it's been a great thing for the band."
