WAFIA, Kardajala Kirridarra & More Receive Australian Council Grants

October's round of Australia Council funding has turned out a high success rate for female artists with 56% of grants going to women or groups containing women.

The $6.4 million worth of funding went to 118 individual artists, 27 groups and 51 arts organisations. Included in the group were indigenous outfit Kardajala Kirridarra ($40,000) to create a long-form video, Stella Donnelly ($18,400) to get her to SXSW and The Great Escape as well as WAFIA ($23,209) for recording/touring and Jen Cloher ($20,000) to assist with her international tours.

Other recipients include Benji Lewis, Hope Street Recordings and Music NT.

Australia Council CEO Tony Grybowski commented that this round of funding would benefit locally and globally due to the large number of successful live performance projects.

"Many of the projects funded include international components which will expand artistic and commercial opportunities for Australian artists and strengthen our international reputation for producing great art and artists, as well as sharing Australian stories with global audiences,” Mr Grybowski said.

The council received a total of 1,423 applications in this round of grant applications with applications for the next grant rounds closing on Tuesday, 6 February.
