The team behind The Simpsons are in discussions about the future of long-running character, Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, following last month's release of documentary, The Problem With Apu.

Written by and starring US comic, Hari Kondabolu, the documentary suggests that Apu portrays negative stereotypes about people of Indian and South Asian heritage.

Actor and voice of Apu, Hank Azaria, told TMZ "the documentary made some really interesting points and gave us a lot to think about, and we really are".

"To hear that anybody that was hurt and offended by any character or vocal performance is really upsetting, that it was offensive or hurtful to anybody," Azaria said.

"I think it's an important conversation and one definitely worth having."
