The song is the second single to come from the Melbourne troubadour's debut EP.

More Didirri More Didirri

Emergent Melburnian singer-songwriter Didirri is ramping up towards the release of his debut EP, unveiling another slice of his earnest, emotive 'sombre folk' with his delicate yet powerful new single, Jude.

Proudly premiering on theMusic.com.au today, Jude carries layer upon layer of meaning, being an ode to both his brother — who lives with autism — and his dog, Jude, as well as influenced by Paul McCartney's insistence in seminal Beatles tune Hey Jude to 'take a sad song and make it better'.

"Although this is a beautiful sentiment, I then learnt through many more years that this may not always be possible," Didirri reflects in a statement about the track.

"Some people don't have it in them to just beat away defeatist feelings through determination. Some people fall victim to their own minds. Jude is an exploration of that feeling. Of not being able to face the morning, not being able to face your own mind. Of just continuing to do the same thing day after day until finally someone tells you otherwise."

The song provides ample room for Didirri's vocal and lyrical dexterity to shine brightly, building on a simple, barely perceptible bass beat and quietly strummed acoustic guitar line to open both his playing style and his vocal cords as the song rolls through its genuinely moving dynamic peaks and troughs.

Jude is a gorgeous, honest and soul-baring outing from one of the country's most talented emergent songwriters, with lyrics such as "My apologies for the delay/ my head don't work in the usual way" and references to the titular canine "chasing shadows on the wall" clearly referring to the tune's inspirations. As the songwriter himself explains:

"I have a close relative with autism; a person whom I love very dearly," Didirri said. "He is like a rock to me. And for anyone who has grown up with an autistic sibling will know, the small things in life stress them out whilst the big things just keep sliding on with no stress at all. Part of this song is an expression of coming home to this every day of my youth, and realising that life is a lot simpler than you think and you should just stop worrying so much.

"This song is also about Jude, a dog. A dog whom I love very dearly. Some dogs, through anxiety, can development an obsession with shadows. And although this might have been triggered by one party too many, this is the case for Jude. She's a beautiful and smart animal but she pays undivided attention to shadows (the things in life that aren't real). If only she could pay attention to the faces right in front of her."

We're not crying, you're crying.

If you want to catch Didirri in action, you've ample opportunities over the next month — he plays The Workers Club in Melbourne this Friday, 11 August, and he has a handful of shows lined up in September too, including at BIGSOUND, in Brisbane, and a pair of support slots for Jack River in Sydney (Lansdowne Hotel, 7 September) and Melbourne (Northcote Social Club, 9 September).
