Respected Producer & Recording Engineer Anthony Lycenko Has Died

A growing number of tributes are emerging for acclaimed producer and recording engineer Anthony Lycenko, who passed away last week, multiple sources have said.

The decorated industry veteran worked with a diversity of acclaimed Australian artists during his storied career, including Busby Marou, Giants Of Science, Darren Middleton, Pete Murray, Garrett Kato, Bec Laughton, Marshall Okell, Brad Butcher, The Short Fall, Peach Fur and more. 

Lycenko, a lecturer for Griffith University's Bachelor Of Popular Music program and SAE QANTM in Byron Bay, established his skills in the UK in the 1990s, when he worked for renowned studios such as Metropolis and Mayfair.

According to his website biography and selected discography, during this time, he lent his touch to albums for artists such as U2, Sinead O'Connor, Elvis Costello, David Bowie, The Pet Shop Boys, Pulp and Suede.

He returned to Australia in 1998, when he moved to Byron Bay and became chief engineer and studio manager at Rockinghorse Studios, a position he held until 2003. 

Among his accolades were nominations for both ARIA and Golden Guitar awards, as well as wins at the Queensland Music and Music Oz awards.

In their tribute post, Brisbane outfit Good Oak described Lycenko as "a great talent and friend". Singer-songwriter Casey Barnes lamented, "Such a gentleman and [shining] light in the Aussie music industry."

Qld's The Short Fall said they were "deeply saddened" by the news: "We'll forever cherish the great times spent in the studio, catching up over a beer at gigs, and our conversations about cricket," they wrote.

Other individuals to have shared their sorrow publicly on their personal pages include Rockhampton drummer Logan Brewster, Brisbane musicians Greg Tschernez and Jason Maynard, and Roz Pappalardo (of Women In Docs and … & The Wayward Gentlemen).
