The Waifs Pip King Gizz To #1 On ARIA Albums Chart

Chameleonic outfit King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard made good on their midweek expectation to finally stop the ubiquitous Adele from rising further up the ARIA Albums Chart on the back of her current tour of the country.

However, the multi-talented beasts and their experimental new album, Microtonal Flying Banana, were ultimately pipped to the #1 position by veteran West Australian folk-rockers The Waifs and their fresh full-length, Ironbark, with the Melbourne collective having to "settle" for #2.

The fact that both acts were able to put a pin in the rise of everyone's favourite sweary songstress and her third LP, 25 — which has moved up to #3 nonetheless — is nothing short of a miracle given the hype around her present run of shows Down Under, which continues in Brisbane tonight.

The impact of her proximity has also had palpable effect on her earlier work, with previous album 21 rising seven spots to hit #10 again for its 276th week in the chart, while first full-length 19 re-enters at #20. There remains some remnant effect of Guns N' Roses' recent local jaunt, too, with the band's Greatest Hits starting to slide somewhat but still turning in a solid result to hang around at #13.

Sydney hip hop duo Horrorshow make an impressive debut with their new album, Bardo State, landing just below Adele's bronze result to take #4, while Holy Holy's celebrated new record, PAINT, earns them a top-10 entry at #7.

There are three film soundtracks in this week's top 10 — Trolls (#5), Fifty Shades Darker (#8) and Moana (#9) — while Ed Sheeran holds down the fort for another week at #6.

Also new and notable in the rankings this week are British maestro Stormzy, stepping out at #11 with Gang Signs & Prayer, Christie Lamb's Loaded (#22), Little Big Town's The Breaker (#26) and Hillsong Young & Free, who praise their way through to a #37 debut with Youth Revival Acoustic.

Singles-wise, Ed Sheeran remains immovable from the top spot with Shape Of You, hitting its eighth week at the peak, though Castle On The Hill (#3) succumbs to the dominant entry of The Chainsmokers & Coldplay, whose Something Just Like This wedges itself in at #2.

Calvin Harris also makes a decent splash with Slide (ft Frank Ocean and Migos), which lands at #12, while Zedd's Stay (ft Alessia Cara) makes its debut at #16, the pair of acts well ahead of their nearest fellow new face, Future, who scrapes into the top 40 at #39 with Selfish (ft Rihanna).
