Nanny State Strikes Again: Sydney Opera House Fined Following Noise Complaints

It seems Sydney's entertainment scene can't catch a break, with news emerging that the iconic Sydney Opera House has been fined $15,000 for exceeding noise limits in the area.

As The Australian reports, the fine arrives after residents in the nearby "Toaster" building complained about the noise following English band Florence & The Machine's Opera House forecourt performance in November 2015.

The fine is reportedly the highest possible amount that can be issued by the NSW Planning & Environment department. 

A venue spokesperson said, "In any concert levels are adjusted throughout in an attempt to comply with sound limits while delivering the best possible audience experience. In this instance, the right balance was not achieved. The sound conditions set in 2004 under the original forecourt DA were very difficult to monitor and ­manage."

In 2016, NSW Planning & Environment reportedly approved a DA for the venue to increase their sound levels by five decibels.
