'90s fans have been pining for an *NSYNC reunion for a while now, but any plans the boy band may have had to reunite look to have been shelved following comments made by Justin Timberlake.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the pop star opened up on the group going on hiatus in 2002.

"We were on a stadium tour, and I just felt like the whole thing was too big," Timberlake said.

"It started as a fun snowball fight that was becoming an avalanche. And, also, I was growing out of it.

"I felt like I cared more about the music than some of the other people in the group. And I felt like I had other music I wanted to make and that I needed to follow my heart."

Timberlake's comments follow reports last year that *NSYNC are in talks to embark on a reunion tour in 2020 in honour of their 25th anniversary.

The band last performed together in 2013 at the MTV VMA's after Timberlake was awarded the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.

Meanwhile, Timberlake appeared in a Super Bowl commercial this week with Christopher Walken, in which the legendary actor recited lyrics from *NSYNC's 2000 hit track, Bye Bye Bye.
