Who's up for a little South Australian sojourn?

More Neil Finn More Neil Finn

If you were tossing up the idea of heading to the Adelaide Festival in March, Neil Finn has probably just made the decision for you by announcing a free twilight concert at the event's opening weekend at Adelaide Riverbank.

The Split Enz and Crowded House legend will do the honours of kicking off the Adelaide Festival with the free show, which will be held on Sunday 5 March and is expected to bring several thousand people to the festival's dining and entertainment precinct, the Parc Palais.

"We're thrilled that one of the world's great musicians and songwriters, Neil Finn, will lead this celebration of all that is joyous about Adelaide in March, and we invite the city to gather together by the river as we celebrate the opening of our first Festival," co-artistic director Rachel Healy said in a statement.

Gates for the opening weekend concert will open at 1pm on 5 March, before Finn takes the stage at 6pm to serenade the crowd with a 90-minute, catalogue-spanning set.

The wider Adelaide Festival will run from 3-19 March. Tickets for all shows are available now via the event's website or on 131 246.

Capacity will be limited to 15,000 people, so it is recommended that punters give themselves plenty of time for travel and entry. Low chairs are permitted.

Organisers have advised that the concert will proceed "rain or shine" but to nonetheless keep an eye on the festival's website for real-time updates in case of severe weather events.
