Brutal: Triple J Unveil New Hosts Before Matt & Alex Even Pack Up Their Stuff

The station is in for a big shake-up come the new year

Well, that was fast. No sooner had we dried our eyes about the fact that beloved triple j Breakfast hosts Matt Okine and Alex Dyson were not long for their role than the station had turned around and delivered their replacements.

Mornings will be at least one voice stronger every day in 2017, with the historic two-person set-up favoured over the past several Breakfast teams now turning into a trio: stepping into Matt and Alex's shoes will be Adelaide radio hosts Ben Harvey and Liam Stapleton, as well as current-affairs journalist Brooke Boney. The three voices will be joined by regular guests Dylan Alcott, who will also appear on the station as its new Weekend Arvos host, and existent j's fave Gen Fricker, who will be taking over the weekday Lunch slot.

So, actually, it's not just breakfast replacements — it's a whole shake-up of personnel across the board from Monday 9 January, with those appointments meaning fellow hosts Lewi McKirdy (Lunch) and Kyran Wheatley (Weekend Arvos) are also on the way out, as is Roots 'N All veteran Sarah Howells, who will be replaced by Nkechi Anele of Saskwatch.

While we're sure these are all very lovely people and undoubtedly excellent replacements for the previous roster, perhaps letting the sting of everyone's impending departures dull just a little bit longer before breathlessly unwrapping Next Year's Models wouldn't have gone astray in ensuring the new crew aren't treated with subconscious bitterness from listeners about having change forced upon them. Hey, you know how they feel about change.

It'd be like The Walking Dead offing Daryl and then introducing another character in basically the next scene called "New Daryl", like we weren't going to notice. LET US GRIEVE, DAMMIT.
