UK Artist Powell Grabs Melb Singer & People Who Headbutt Watermelons For New Single Video

Sure, why not

London-based electronic artist Powell has tapped into the talents of Melburnian singer Jonnine Standish, aka Jonny, pairing the Aussie voice with his beats and visuals of some people demolishing watermelons with their heads for the clip for his new single, also called Jonny.

Best known as one-half of Melbourne minimal electronic duo HTRK, Jonny softens the track's hard, disorienting edges as Powell sticks to his mantra of wanting "to do something more plastic, more elastic, more surprising" for his upcoming debut album, Sport. The record very nearly didn't get a chance at life, only coming to fruition after Powell "had an allergic reaction" to an entirely different album he had written last year before binning it around Christmas.

Powell has said that he named Sport thus "because I wanted it to be fun and playful", and that's certainly reflected in the video; the UK artist asked fans to send footage to an email address — one that had been publicised on billboards in London and New York — and either directly asked people therein to be crushing melons with their faces, or Powell's fans all experienced an unprecedented degree of hive-mind-like thinking and went for it because it felt right.

Either way, the end result is glorious. Check it out below.
