"To exclude anti-LGBTQI bullying programs from schools is beyond cruel."

More Troye Sivan More Troye Sivan

The mother of young electro pop superstar Troye Sivan has started a petition today to save Safe Schools funding, a program that strives to create a safer and more inclusive environment for LGBTQI students and staff in schools in Australia.

Laurelle Mellet writes in a change.org petition, "My son Troye Sivan told us he was gay at 14. It made me nervous - I’d heard horrific stories of homophobic bullying and kids being suicidal at school. What’s worse is our education system won’t fight it - Malcolm Turnbull hasn’t renewed Safe Schools funding.

"To exclude anti-LGBTQI bullying programs from schools is beyond cruel. I’d like to think all parents would fight for a system that makes their child feel safe, not worthless."

Mellet's petition comes off the back of recent news that Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull would not renew funding for the program, which is currently taught in roughly 500 schools.

Sivan himself came out publicly in a YouTube video in 2013, which went viral and currently sits at 7 million views.

"Troye was was terrified but needn’t have been - his coming out video went viral and we couldn’t be prouder of him. But Troye was lucky. Thousands of gay teens battle aggressive intimidation, exclusion and even attempts of suicide," writes Mellet.
