"He is our little mascot. We are going to protect him."

A whole community of cat- and music-lovers have jumped to the defense of a Kiwi record store after complaints were made about its resident cat, Callaway.

The deaf 15-year-old feline has made his home at Vinyl Destination, a record store that also sells takeaway coffee, but has recently received complaints for being "disgusting".

As NZ Herald reports, owner Luke Wormald received a Facebook message stating, "This is terrible, this is a cat in a place where you sell food".

"I said 'hey, we don't sell food' and he came back saying 'this is very unprofessional, it's disgusting. I've been in this city for 15 years, etc.' I basically told him to get a life. Two hours later I get a call from the council saying they've had an anonymous phone call complaining about the cat," reveals Wormald.

The local council attended the store and told Wormald he was in the clear and had no issue with keeping Callaway. As a result, the ordeal has generated huge support for the store and Callaway.

"We've had nearly 70,000 people see it. It's actually gone viral," Wormald said. "It just goes to show that there are people who don't mind it and want us here.

"He is our little mascot. We are going to protect him. People come in to see him every day and have a cuddle or say 'hey'."

The adorable cat has a Facebook page of his own with over 2,000 likes and appears to have a personal affinity to the music of Cat Stevens and Pussycat. Figures.
