NSW Pubs Call For Lockouts To Be Changed To 'No New Patrons' Policy

That's a start.

Sydney's lockout laws are currently up for review and while we've heard opinions from those in government, activist groups and music venues to name a few, the Australian Hotels Association are the latest to throw their hat in the ring and are calling for the legislation to be relaxed.

As Fairfax reports, the NSW pubs lobby group are proposing for a "no new patrons" policy, as well as a complete end to the 1.30am lockouts and 10pm closure of bottle shops.

AHA NSW Director of Liquor and Policing John Green said lockouts "unfairly penalise many safe, well-run venues with a proven track record of compliance".

"The Liquor Act already has real teeth to deal with rogue operators," Green continued.

"The power to cancel or suspend a licence already exists, as does the power to disqualify any person from having an interest in the business.

"Imposing additional blanket measures on everyone, regardless of whether they are a good or bad operator, is poor policy."

The AHA's submission references Newtown, who introduced the policy mid-last year along with drink restrictions after midnight, as an example of how the 3am "no new patrons" policy can work, calling it "the sensible and pragmatic alternative to a lockout".

The policy allows punters planning to enter the venue after 3am to book ahead and prevent being turned away at the door if they turn up unannounced.

"Existing patrons can leave to have a cigarette or obtain food whilst other persons can pre-plan their attendance and notify the premises, with that position in the venue held for their arrival."

The submission also suggests other alternatives such as extending late night train services, an increase in Uber drivers and a ride-sharing "super rank" in the CBD.

A full review of the lockout laws are expected to be delivered in August by former judge Ian Callinan.
