This Week's Releases

Robert Forster — Songs To Play (EMI)

The first solo album in seven years, Songs To Play is explores "the sunny upbeat terrain that's so aurally representative (and cognisant) of his hometown Brisbane". There are "gently cascading acoustics and beautifully languid melodies", "strong narratives" and "rich imagery", and with four-and-a-half stars from us and Album Of The Week, be assured that Forster's "striped sunlight sound is back".

Baio — The Names (Glassnote/Liberator)

"An intelligent man with clever rhythms and an acerbic writing style", Baio gets in touch with his theatrical side in songs like Sister Of Pearl, where "he swoons with the melodramatic flair of Bryan Ferry". With instrumental tracks scattered throughout the record and the album split in half, "providing a bookending of sorts to the two sides", the album "addresses the intersection of culture, perspective and identity" in theme. Our reviewer gave The Names three-and-a-half stars.

Dustin Tebbutt — Home (Eleven/Universal)

Tebbutt's album maintains "an expansive and expanding sonic landscape, threading an aural tapestry of spectacular detail", while still sounding intimate. Tebbutt's voice itself is a highlight and "becomes a part of the music at its best moments", through songs like Life In The Middle and Plans. Picking up four-and-a-half stars, Home seems to be an album about dedication, rather than brokenheartedness.
