David Gilmour sealed the fate of the legendary psych-rock outfit in an interview with Classic Rock Magazine

More Pink Floyd More Pink Floyd

David Gilmour, the long-time guitarist of legendary English psych-rock pioneers Pink Floyd, has confirmed that the veteran band are officially "done" after nearly half a century together.

Although the band entered a protracted hiatus back in 1994, they came together once in 2005 before reuniting for a couple of years from 2012, but Gilmour has told Classic Rock Magazine that, this time, the show's over for real.

"I've had 48 years in Pink Floyd — quite a few of those years at the beginning, with [co-founder] Roger [Waters]," Gilmour told the mag. "And those years in what is now considered to be our heyday were 95% musically fulfilling and joyous and full of fun and laughter.

"I certainly don't want to let the other 5% colour my view of what was a long and fantastic time together, but it has run its course, we are done — and it would be fakery to go back and do it again."

It's an issue on which Gilmour evidently feels strongly, telling Classic Rock Magazine that any reunion now without late co-founder Richard Wright, who passed away in 2008, would be "wrong" (last year's The Endless River featured unfinished contributions from Wright, so apparently passed Gilmour's test). In fact, not even the desires of fans the world over are enough to budge him on it.

"Obviously I accept there are people who want to go and see and hear this legend that was Pink Floyd, but I'm afraid that's not my responsibility," Gilmour said.

"To me, it's just two words that tie together the work that four people did together. It's just a pop group. I don't need it. I don't need to go there."

Despite calling time on Pink Floyd, however, Gilmour isn't done with music yet — he's got a solo album, Rattle That Lock, in the pipeline — as does fellow Floydian Roger Waters, as Consequence Of Sound points out — ahead of a planned tour of North America next year.
