Sydney's Iconic Lansdowne To Close Its Doors

It just keeps getting worse for Sydney. 

After some of the city's most popular venues have been forced to shut up shop due to struggling to combat the lockout laws introduced last year, (most recently Hugos Lounge and The Spice Cellar) the iconic Lansdowne is set to close after almost 90 years. 

The live music venue will close its doors for the final time on 29 August and it will then be taken over to be used for "education use".

As the City Of Sydney's Development Application details: "Change of use of the Landsdowne Hotel to an education use (200 students) and associated alterations for new main entry from Knox Street, new signage, accessible ramp, internal lift, fire stair, multi-purpose hall, staff toilets, practice studios, ensemble rooms and administration office."

Speaking to theMusic, the venue's marketing manager confirmed that the Lansdowne has been sold to the Academy Of Music & Performing Arts (ADMA) which specialises in music production, dance and theatre.

Punters can take some solace in the devastating news in that the venue, most famous for its live music attractions, will be used as a school for music.

As yet another popular venue closes and businesses continue to struggle, we have to ask the question: will the controversial lockout laws be amended or is this truly the beginning of the end for Sydney's nightlife?
