The Aussie comedian's hit series returns in October

More Josh Thomas More Josh Thomas

National broadcaster ABC has announced the return date for Josh ThomasPlease Like Me, which not only reaches its third season this year but will, for the first time, be broadcast to audiences on ABC's main channel, ABC1, quite the promotion from its previous spot on ABC2.

The semi-autobiographical comedy will be back on Aussie screens from 9.30pm on Thursday, 15 October, and carries yet another air of distinction in boasting an episode directed by Thomas himself — his first such dalliance — while long-serving director Matthew Saville is back to carry the weight of the 10-episode season.

The third season of Please Like Me sees the addition of acclaimed actress Emily Barclay to the cast, with incumbent players including Thomas Ward, Caitlin Stasey, Hannah Gadsby, Keegan Joyce, Debra Lawrance, David Roberts, Renee Lim, and John The Dog.

THIS GUY.

The show was recently exported to the United States, where it is broadcast by Pivot and has garnered considerable acclaim — from the likes of The New YorkerTIME and The Los Angeles Times, no less — in addition to the praise heaped upon it here at home. Its move to ABC's primary channel, then, shouldn't come as massively unexpected — especially not in the broadcaster's eyes.

"We're thrilled to introduce Please Like Me to a whole new ABC audience with its move to our main channel for its third season," the network's head of comedy, Rick Kalowski, said in a statement. "We know it will delight existing fans and find many new ones."

Thomas, however, is characteristically keeping such promises pretty low-key.

"I lost too much weight in my face this year, and now I have my dad's face," the comedian said of the new season's prospects in a statement.

"Otherwise, season three is our best yet."

Tune into ABC1 on 15 October to find out.
