Wolf Alice — My Love Is Cool (Dirty Hit Records/Sony)

Nabbing four-and-a-half stars and Album Of The Week from us, My Love Is Cool is "all about the build-up; the catch-and-release mood these guys set from opening to end is one that seems to belie their young years". Our reviewer notes that not a single track is wasted as a filler; instead, every song "earns its rightful place on the album". The album takes you through a '90s grunge vibe, fuzzy shoegaze and razor-edged vocals too.

Oh Mercy — When We Talk About Love (EMI)

Inspired by "the lush and detailed music of the '60s", our reviewer thought this record was "introspective and elegant", a result of Alex Gow taking some time off for 15 months in America in "self-imposed isolation". Scoring four stars, the record "is a distinctly Australian body of acoustic pop music that reaches for the decades rather than the years".

Everything Everything — Get To Heaven (Sony)

Packed to the brim with "soaring vocals, blistering guitar lines and scintillating synths" that are sure to get the band into stadiums and arenas, Get To Heaven is a fun, dance-filled album that will coax "our feet into your best pair of dancing shoes and ditches any inhibitions you might have". Though there are a few shortcomings, it's still a solid record coming in at three stars

Desaparecidos — Payola (Epitaph/Warner)

The indie-punk band, fronted by Conor Oberst, have always been politically-charged, and with Payola have "expanded the scope of their scorn to a more global level and unearthed plenty to be incensed about". The band's sound is "cohesive", "raw and urgent" and is a showcase of "the band’s unquestionable conviction and the edgy punk-tinged rock they conjure in which to house these sprawling concerns". Payola earned three-and-a-half stars from us.
