Glastonbury organiser Emily Eavis has revealed in a new interview that she received death threats after March's announcement that US rapper Kanye West would perform as the festival's headlining act this year.

Speaking to The Times Eavis said the abuse she received "was just horrible."

Many festival goers were immediately angered by the decision and an online petition shortly followed with over 133,000 people protesting that a rock band should replace the controversial hip-hop artist.

"It was not a pleasant world we unwrapped...I had death threats and stuff," Eavis said.

"It was just crazy. It was getting out of control. We had Time magazine, all the American news channels saying they were going to come down. This incredible onslaught worldwide."

Eavis maintains that the festival will go ahead with West as planned and the reason he was picked was because he is "making the most exciting music at the moment."

"It was quite upsetting because we were talking about something that was so exciting and interesting and fresh and brilliant for the festival. He is an amazing force as a performer. For us, getting the biggest star in the world was an amazing coup."

Joining West as headliner acts at the British festival next month include rock bands The Who and Foo Fighters.
