Twenty-seven-year-old Vine creator Ryan McHenry passed away on Sunday after a battle with cancer
It was one of our favourite things on the internet in 2013, and now old meme Ryan Gosling Won't Eat His Cereal has come full circle — albeit under somewhat sorrowful circumstances — with a short clip of the Drive star finally downing some brekky flakes in honour of meme-starter and Vine creator Ryan McHenry, who passed away at age 27 this past weekend after a battle with cancer.
As with all Vines, that's all there is to it — six seconds of pretty straightforward footage — but Gosling's gesture, replete with little spoon salute at the end, makes for a heartwarming tribute to the late McHenry, with Gosling going on to say on Twitter: "My heart goes out to all of Ryan McHenry's family and friends. Feel very lucky to have been a part of his life in some small way."
McHenry was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in July 2013, soon after breaking through online as an early Vine star with his series of shorts demonstrating Gosling's (characters') apparent distaste for breakfast cereal. The series took off, and yielded one of that year's most inspired memes in its wake. It received a renewed burst of attention earlier this month after Gosling referenced the meme during a Twitter Q&A about new film Lost River - with which McHenry engaged.
