The 'Last Week Tonight' host will make his maiden voyage Down Under this August

Emmy Award-winning writer, comedian, Daily Show alumnus and the host of HBO's Last Week TonightJohn Oliver, has announced his first-ever tour dates in Australia for a whirlwind two-date-only visit to the country this August.

Oliver will perform his first show at Melbourne's Palais Theatre on Thursday, 27 August, before heading up to Sydney, where he'll bring the laughs to the State Theatre on Sunday, 30 August.

It's been a consistent journey from strength to strength for former UK stand-up Oliver, who rose to wider renown for his role as a writer and correspondent on Jon Stewart's The Daily Show for seven years from 2006 to 2013. During his Daily Show time, he popped up on Community (as Professor Duncan), The Smurfs films (as Vanity Smurf), and The Simpsons (as Booth Wilkes-John), as well as maintaining successful strides in the stand-up arena — he won the 2007 Breakout Award at the Aspen Comedy Festival, and was gifted his own Comedy Central special — Terrifying Times — in 2008, which consequently gave rise to four seasons hosting John Oliver's New York Stand Up Show for the network.

Perhaps a lesser-known outlet for Oliver's droll style is his weekly podcast The Bugle, which he co-writes and co-presents with long-time collaborator Andy Zaltzman — but regardless of from which of his playgrounds you know him, we can pretty much guarantee that, if you're able to attend them, these inaugural Aussie performances will be ones you won't want to miss.
