Scottish actor Iain Glen has signed on to star in the new ABC series Cleverman.

Glen, known to Game Of Thrones fans as Ser Jorah Mormont, will star in the "high concept genre drama" (sounds like a highbrow way of saying 'science fantasy') alongside a local cast that includes Frances O'Connor and Deborah Mailman.

Developed by ABC's Indigenous Department, the story involves a battle for survival between "non-humans" and humans set against a "dystopian landscape".

According to an ABC statement about the new series, "Central to the drama is the story of two estranged Indigenous brothers" and "otherworldly dreaming creatures".

Creature designs will be produced by New Zealand's Weta Workshop (Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, Avatar, Godzilla, King Kong) and Jacob Nash (Bangarra Dance Company).

Directing the series will be Wayne Blair (The Sapphires, Offspring) and Leah Purcell (Redfern Now).

Cleverman is set to air in 2016.
