Godspeed You! Black Emperor – Asunder, Sweet & Other Distress (Constellation/Inertia)
The Canadian post-rock band release their fifth album since 1997 and “it’s to the band’s great strength that they can channel this sonic palette into something outside of a typically oppressive landscape and into something hopeful”, according to The Music’s Andrew McDonald.
Skipping Girl Vinegar – The Great Wave (Independent)
“The energy is there to grab your attention straight away and never lets go”, observed The Music’s Pete Laurie of The Great Wave. “So many songs in this record sound like they’d be perfect for a movie montage, when the main character has learned their lesson and jauntily rights a lifetime of wrongs in a few minutes of screen time.” Stream it here!

The Mountain Goats – Beat The Champ (Merge/Remote Control)
“The Mountain Goats have managed to turn their blend of punk and indie-infused folk, intricate storytelling and knack for turning a lyrical phrase into a wide-ranging collection of sweeping epics, introverted and intimate reflections, and everything between”, said The Music’s Pete Laurie. This is the Californian band’s 15 studio album since 1994.
