The ex-general manager of marketing at Sony Music will officially start his duties from April 27

The former general manager of marketing for Asia-Pacific at Sony Music, Tim Kelly, has been announced as the new managing director of Inertia Music, part of wider music and entertainment company The Inertia Group.

Kelly will assume the role from 27 April, and will be based in Sydney in order to orchestrate Inertia's marketing, publicity, sales and distribution teams, reporting to The Inertia Group chief executive Colin Daniels.

"I am very pleased to have Tim Kelly join Inertia Music's management team," Daniels said of the appointment in a statement. "Tim has an impressive history as a music executive and, most importantly to us, he has a love of independent music!"

Added Kelly: "It's great to be joining Ashley, Colin and the team at Inertia and I look forward to working with their exciting roster of artists and labels."

'Exciting' is right — with artists from Young Fathers, Bjork, Father John Misty, Aphex Twin and Sufjan Stevens to ODESZA, Meg Mac, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Sia, Sleater-Kinney, Jack Ladder and The Delta Riggs falling under their purview, Inertia has something of a well-earned reputation for the quality of its international and local signings.

In tackling the new challenges presented by his appointment, Kelly will no doubt be drawing upon his more-than-two-decades of experience in the industry, which includes not only his time at Sony but dates way back to his role as co-founder of iconic British label One Little Indian, in a career that has seen him work as head of international at Rough Trade and managing director of Pinnacle Labels (UK) plus an earlier stint with Sony as its marketing director as well as a lengthy stint as the general manager of marketing at Universal Music Group.
