Looking to cut through the swathe of funnypeople to find guaranteed laughs? We've got you covered

To avoid some of the anxiety that flicking through the massive Melbourne International Comedy Festival program can cause, we’ve picked a few gems among the bunch that you should check out during the festival.

Milton Jones

UK funnyman Milton Jones took MICF by storm last year, and for good reason. He’s got an intriguing stage presence that makes even the most monotonous of comments humourous, and his punch lines are rarely predictable.

Arj Barker

He might be an obviously choice, and, sure, he often rolls through town, but Aussie favourite Arj Barker has a new show on offer. Get In My Head made its debut at the Adelaide Fringe, and after performing the new material over 20 times, he’s in fine form.

celia pacquola

The multi-talented Celia Pacquola is back for another round of MICF goodness with an encore season of her show Let Me Know How It All Works Out. Previously nominated for a Barry Award, it's candid, endearing and very, very funny stuff - and she's only got seven shows lined up this festival, the first of which is tonight so... get on that.

gen fricker

If you don't love Gen Fricker, it's possible there's something wrong with you. After all, Fricker's shows, with their eclectic, twisted mix of musical comedy, are objectively excellent. That's just science right there. So either check out her new show Monsterpussy or get yourself checked out.

heckle!

Exactly what it sounds like, Heckle! turns the typical stand-up comedy context on its head and puts the power, of the witty barb, scathing insight or mum joke in the hands of the audience, which every comedian and internet user knows is probably a terrible idea.

Should be heaps of fun, though.
