Flawless victory

More Gwar More Gwar

Fans of late GWAR frontman Dave Brockie, aka Oderus Urungus, have launched a petition to have the colourful performer included as a playable character in NetherRealm Studios' forthcoming Mortal Kombat X — and they're less than 600 signatures away from hitting their goal.

The petition started earlier this week, and in a matter of days has already racked up, at the time of writing, 26,413 signatures towards its goal of 27,000 to make NetherRealm turn their heads and listen to their plea.

"People who are familiar with GWAR know Oderus Urungus (played by Dave Brockie), the former singer of the band, unfortunately passed away last March," the petition's summary says. "Oderus was as hilarious as he was viscous1, and also one of the most colorful and creative characters not only in rock history, but also history in general. Though his music will live on, what better way would there be to further immortalize (toasty) Oderus Urungus [than] to have him be a playable character on Mortal Kombat X?"

You certainly can't fault their logic — with a fearsome visage, penchant for gore and deliciously ostentatious stagewear, Oderus would slot into the Mortal Kombat canon with ease, comfortably standing alongside the likes of Shao Khan and Goro in the "creepy adversary from another realm" stakes. Besides, they let Freddy Krueger into the last game, and that makes even less sense.

Of course, even if the petition is successful, it's unlikely we'll see Brockie in the game at release — with only a couple of months to go until the game hits shelves (and a series of preview videos unveiling the roster being dropped at the moment), if we are to see the late GWAR singer in the game at all, it will most likely be as part of a downloadable content (DLC) package at some stage in the future.

Mortal Kombat X is due for international release on 14 April, when Sub-Zero and Scorpion might finally comprehensively sort out their long-running, trans-generational beef. Seriously, dudes, it's been, like, 20 years. Move on and make way for Oderus Urungus.
