Future of live music at the venue unclear

Sydney’s renowned Lansdowne Hotel is likely to close for renovations after this weekend as planned gigs in February are moved to alternate venues.

The venue has hosted regular music since April last year after is was bought and revitalised by the Oscars Group, however theMusic.com.au understands renovations will force the closure of the venue imminently. Planned shows by Grenadiers, Daily Meds and The Laurels have all been moved (as evident by posts on the respective bands’ Facebook pages) and the venue currently has no gigs booked beyond January.

Representatives from Oscars had not responded to theMusic.com.au’s request for comment by deadline today, but the Chippendale venue’s bookers said they have been instructed to halt live shows. The future of live music is unclear at this stage.

“[We] were instructed to cancel all entertainment at The Lansdowne from February 1 as the venue undergoes a refurbishment scheduled to last approximately four months,” Nathan Farrell Entertainment’s Josef Muller told theMusic.com.au today.

“We’re unsure as to what the program will look like moving forward but will certainly be meeting with the owners prior to the reopening to discuss. Needless to say, we are really proud of the programming and culture that we’ve grown around the venue for the past eight months and look forward to going out with a bang with the Hard-Ons tomorrow night!”

The venue has been host to a number of well-attended and well-received shows since Oscars took over, re-establishing itself as a key venue in Sydney.

The surge in popularity came after the hotel endured a turbulent few years. A fire caused structural damage in January 2013 before it re-opened in June of the same year.

The Ocean Party will play the Lansdowne tonight, before the Hard-Ons wrap up their residency and Born Lion play on Saturday night.

Having shifted their shows, Grenadiers will now play Frankie’s Pizza Thursday 5 February, The Laurels’ free show on Friday 6 will now take place at Oxford Art Factory and Daily Meds move to fellow Oscars venue The Annandale Hotel Friday 6.

A representative for post hardcore band Hellions, due to play the venue Friday 13 February, had not yet confirmed details of any potential change.
