Watch Triple J's All-Star Attempt To Write A Hottest 100 Theme Song

Triple J might have just won the year with their new sketch video, Can These 40 Musicians Write The Ultimate Hottest 100 Song? — featuring, as the title implies, 40 of the most prominent musicians getting about the airwaves at the moment, including Bluejuice, Lorde, Ball Park Music, Flight Facilities, Ben Folds, Steve Aoki, Skrillex and several more.

The premise of the sketch is simple enough — breakfast hosts Matt & Alex have gathered the esteemed musical minds — "the most talented musicians and songwriters on the planet, or … Bluejuice" — together in one room in an effort to compose a theme song for next year's Hottest 100 competition. Naturally, it doesn't end up well.

Despite the odd awkward edit or delivery (in fairness, they're musos, not comedians), the sketch is actually pretty brilliant, giving the participants a brief moment to poke fun at themselves in truly endearing style. For example, Peking Duk and Flight Facilities finding out what "feat." means is wonderful, some of the cameos (Paul Kelly, Folds, Skrillex, Rick Astley, Vance Joy) are nothing short of inspired, and Alex's scolding of Flume ("we need a song first before you can remix it") is simply A-grade disappointed-parent.

Interestingly, there's no sign of competition frontrunner Chet Faker — it feels like he's the only person who wasn't a part of it — but his absence is unlikely to impact too badly on his odds of winning the darn thing.
