Triple J Unearthed Unveils Top 50 Most-Played Artists

Triple J Unearthed's digital radio station has announced the top 50 Australian artists who filled its airwaves this year, with West Australian rhymesmith Coin Banks taking out the top spot, and several high-profile upstarts who are set to hit 2015 running appearing throughout the list.

Alongside Banks, most, if not all, of the top ten should be familiar, with prodigious young muso Japanese Wallpaper, who has enjoyed an exceptional year, running hot on the rapper's heels, coming in at second place just ahead of Sahara Beck (#3), Sable (#4) and D.D Dumbo (#5). Emotive rockers Ceres are within the top ten, taking out the seventh-highest place on the list, just above ascendant songstress Airling (#8). High-Tails and DEJA round out the final two spots of the top ten, with Tassie punks Luca Brasi only just falling outside that initial bracket of acts, taking away #11.

The Ocean Party (#12), Chiefs (#14), L-FRESH The Lion (#17), Babaganouj (#18), Yeo (#19) and Kucka (#21) all make relatively high entries among the top 50, though plenty of just-as-deserving acts occupy the lower rankings, too — turn-of-the-'90s dance duo Client Liasion are smack-bang on the halfway mark, just ahead of acclaimed up-and-comers Hockey Dad (#26), who themselves come in just ahead of fellow wave-makers Paces (#27).

Meanwhile, the US-bound Gooch Palms were in favour this year among Unearthed listeners, the pair taking out #38 on the top 50 most-listened acts, just ahead of Rainy Day Women (#40); UV boi and The Bennies both get a nod, at #43 and #44 respectively, while Jinja Safari's Pepa Knight is standing firm on his own two feet at #46. Fledgling singer-songwriter Eleanor Dunlop, from Sydney, rounds out the list.

Most, if not all, of these acts are well placed for the year ahead, and if their performances this year are any indication, we can expect some game-changing work to start cropping up from the Unearthed class of 2014.
