Discover 50-31

Twenty of the most powerful people in the Australian music industry have been revealed today, with the unveiling of the 50-to-31 rankings in the 2014 AMID Power 50.

The annual and definitive ranking of the music industry’s most powerful achievers is published each year in the Australasian Music Industry Directory magazine. The magazine is now available to order here.

Over the course of the next three days theMusic.com.au will be releasing the names of those deemed worthy of the Power 50, which is determined by the AMID team of editors and writers through consultation with the wider industry.

In the initial reveal there are eight names which make their first appearance in the 50, including the joint-entry of MONA owner David Walsh and music curator Brian Ritchie. There are also two re-entries, including I OH YOU founder Johann Ponniah.

As well as the Power 50, this year’s edition features interviews with Sony boss Denis Handlin, Mushroom’s Michael Gudinki and Chugg Entertainment’s Michael Chugg. There is also a special feature on pioneering dance music promoter Richie McNeill, who resigned earlier this year after selling the Stereosonic Festival to US EDM goliath SFX.

Excerpts from those interviews will be posted on theMusic.com.au throughout the week. The first is Handlin, who is not only celebrating 30 years as CEO of Sony Music Australia (and its previous incarnations) this year but will receive the ARIA Industry Icon Award at Wednesday’s ARIA Awards.
