'The Battle Of The Five Armies' is released this December

The Battle of Helm's Deep was arguably the the best part of the entire Lord Of The Rings trilogy, and now we look set to receive a movie-length look at another crucial skirmish in Middle-earth with the third instalment of The Hobbit trilogy, The Battle Of The Five Armies.

The final chapter of Peter Jackson's three-part adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's relatively short book, starring Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen and Richard Armitage, has now released its final trailer ahead of its December opening, and it looks pretty darn glorious in all respects.

The Battle Of The Five Armies picks up where The Desolation Of Smaug left off; namely, with a giant freaking dragon about to ruin the lives of everyone dwelling in the quiet settlement of Lake-town because a hobbit and his company of Dwarves can't leave well enough alone. At the same time, the quietly remobilising dark force and Rings big bad Sauron extends his reach across Middle-earth, while goblins, orcs and wargs bear down on the Dwarves' reclaimed Lonely Mountain, and Men and Elves prove themselves to be the massive a-holes everybody expects them to be by the time the previous/consequent trilogy's events begin to unfold.

It looks to be an action-packed, beautifully realised imagining of the milestone mythological battle, and might actually bring the epic trilogy to a conclusion that doesn't feel like it should have come like four hours earlier than it actually does.

The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies is released in Australia on Boxing Day.
